Car Dealer Live: Cobras, Mustangs and classic cars with Pilgrim Motorsports

0

Pilgrim Motorsports can count itself as one of the smallest car manufacturers in the country, but its products, services and cars it sells is big business.

The firm’s history dates back to the sixties and under the name of Pilgrim cars it created a fine reputation hand-building Cobra and Speedster replicas. Since then, the business has undergone a name change and now headed up by Ford Mustang fan Paul Bennett and classic car restorer Adrian Hewetson. It’s a family business with around 25 staff members.

Along with the Cobra and Speedster builds, Pilgrim Motorsports has become a ‘one-stop-shop’ classic car specialist with its restoration and maintenance services. It also sources, imports and sells Mustangs through its musclecar.uk division – so successfully it’s become Europe’s largest classic Mustang dealer.

The firm also specialises in upgrading and souping up new Mustangs, it has an eight-bay workshop, paint shops, and manufactures parts for restoration projects and its Cobra builds.

‘When I got involved in the company, it wasn’t just classic cars we wanted to do but also American classics’ says Bennett in the interview which you can watch at the top of this story.

‘The kit car business had gone from its heady days of selling five to 10 kits a week to decreasing in popularity. I’ve always had a passion for Mustangs and my business partner – whose background is restoring cars and who’s also a Mustang fan – and I decided to go to America, buy a load of Mustangs, Thunderbirds and Galaxies and bring them back here. Adrian now works in America to find the best possible cars.’

Along with all of this, Pilgrim Motorsports also has a research and development operation that’s currently readying the ‘KarGo’ – an electric, fully autonomous ‘pod’ built in partnership with Aberystwyth University.

In the interview, Bennett talks with host James Batchelor about the kit car and replica market, how his business sources classic Mustangs among other topics. You can watch it at the top of this story.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London now offers virtual showroom and digital services

0

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London is now offering a virtual showroom and digital services to customers.

Rolls-Royce and its retailer partner H.R. Owen is currently finalising the showroom’s relocation from Berkeley Square to a new ’boutique’ in nearby Berkeley Street, and the ‘virtual showroom experience’ will be carried over to the new site.

Existing and prospective customers can take part in virtual ‘walkaround’ briefings and communicate with the showroom via other digital services including WhatsApp and Signal.

Customers unable to take part in face-to-face meetings with product experts can still share images and ideas for their commissioned car, which are then passed to the Bespoke Collective of Designers, Engineers and Craftspeople at Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood factory.

The factory responds with sketches and material samples, which are couriered to customers for review. Once the design direction is agreed, clients are able to sign a commitment digitally.

Rolls-Royce’s bespoke commissioning room at Goodwood

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London says it is possible ‘to commission a highly bespoke motor car without leaving the comfort of one’s home’.

The showroom also offers ‘Effortless Servicing’ which is arranged via instant messaging, phone or the brand’s ‘Whispers’ application. Cars are collected, serviced, fully detailed and sanitised before being returned, and should the customer not wish to be without a Rolls-Royce, another car will be made available.

Julian Jenkins, regional director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars UK, Europe, Russia and Central Asia, said: ‘Rolls-Royce clients do not react to change, they drive it.

‘In this spirit, experts operating from the marque’s showrooms constantly evolve their offering to ensure that they provide the world’s most discerning consumer group with the most relevant services through the very latest communications channels.

‘To this end, experts from the marque’s home market flagship dealership, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London, have reacted to several accelerating trends in client behaviour, prompted in part by the arrival of the most advanced Rolls-Royce yet – new Ghost. Indeed, the showroom’s practices reflect a new standard in customer centricity.’

Online used car dealer Carzam website to go live at 6pm as it aims to accelerate car buying’s digital transition

0

Used car sales website Carzam.co.uk – the brainchild of Big Motoring World boss Peter Waddell – is to go live today.

Offering thousands of used cars for sale available for same day collection or next day delivery, the experienced motor trade team behind the site say they are aiming to ‘accelerate and lead’ the digital transformation of the industry.

Waddell has teamed up with investor John Bailey, former Cox Automotive International president and automotive expert, and they’ve hired former Carshop man Kirk O’Callaghan as CEO.

Waddell said: ‘The experience of lockdown has taught us that the used car market is as buoyant as ever, but that customers buying used cars want to do so with the same peace of mind and quality treatment as a new car buyer.

‘Our difference is not only that we have the ability to source the absolute best used car stock thanks to our vast motor trade experience, but also that we know every single car we sell intimately thanks to our dedicated hub and preparation centre.

‘This is not just another online used car ordering and delivery service – it’s a game changer.’

Exclusive: Car Dealer gets first look at used car sales website Carzam

Carzam collection hubs have been set up in Corby, Northamptonshire, and Stratford, London, where customers will be able to pick their purchases up on the same day.

The main Carzam hub will be centrally located in Peterborough, Cambs, close to the A1(M) and A14, offering good transport links North, South, East and West.

The new site, which has brought hundreds of jobs to the area including 12 new apprenticeships, also inspects and prepares the cars offered for sale via the portal.

Car Dealer was given an exclusive early look at the site earlier this week. We were impressed with its ability to offer up-sale opportunities that are vital for used car business profitability, including paint protection and extended warranties.

Carzam investor John Bailey said: ‘A huge amount of planning and investment has gone into Carzam’s launch and we are set to take the market by storm, offering levels of service, inventory and investment that our rivals will envy.

‘As used car retailing becomes an ever-more digital environment, we are confident that Carzam will be the best solution out there not only for our customers, but also for our suppliers.’

A countdown on the Carzam website shows the service goes live at 6pm this evening.

Car Dealer Live: Cobras, Mustangs and classic cars with Pilgrim Motorsports, live at midday today

Today’s Car Dealer Live will have a classic car theme as Pilgrim Motorsports joins the show.

Pilgrim has been building cars since the 1960s and specialises in Cobra and Speedster replicas – it’s one of the smallest car manufacturers in the UK.

Latterly, along with the Cobra and Speedster builds, the business has become a ‘one-stop-shop’ classic car specialist with its restoration and maintenance services.

Headed up by directors Paul Bennett and Adrian Hewetson, the West Sussex-based business has a sister division called musclecar.uk that specialises in acquiring and looking after classic American muscles cars, and in particular the Ford Mustang.

Bennett will be chatting with host James Batchelor live on the Car Dealer YouTube channel from midday today, and viewers can watch the broadcast from the top of this story from 12pm.

As it’s a live show, viewers can post questions in the comments box on the YouTube page.
